The Gadfly is a series of letters offering commentary on local issues and published in the Warrensburg Gazette.
Dear Editor
I watched the City Council meeting Monday night to see what they were going to do about the hocus-pocus bond issue; they had the good sense to postpone discussion until they can have a work session. The papers I picked up said they want to use about $500,000 per year of the general sales tax revenue to pay for the bonds. Does that mean they expect revenues to exceed regular expenses by that much every year? Think about it!
As I read the continuing story of Community Center funding, I find I've been using the wrong title for the facility; I've been calling it the "Taj Mahal," but it appears a member of the Park Board calls it the "palace" - and I guess he should know. Friday's editorial in the daily paper wondered about the rationale of voters who approved a sales tax to build the "palace" but rejected a property tax to maintain it. I can answer that - much of the sales tax is paid by people who live outside the city, while property tax burden is limited to those who live within the city (or their landlords). They voted to tax someone else!
The GWACC&VC (Warrensburg Chamber) has published a new Old Drum brochure. They should have checked with the Historical Society so the description of Old Courthouse hours would have been accurate - the Society is just a phone call away.
Since the GWACC&VC is receiving taxpayer money (the room tax), perhaps the City- appointed surveillance committee might consider asking them to identify the pieces paid for out of tax money - that way we'll have some idea where the money is going.
Aunt Ida says she missed seeing the County Commissioners at the opening ceremonies of the County Fair last week when 'bout every other dignitary around was up there on the stand. She also said she was a bit perplexed about why Monday's daily paper had 26 column inches on a local funeral home owner and nary a smidgen on the fair.
